How we promote British Values and SMSC
The following statement was given by OFSTED;
“We encourage pupils to respect the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
We ensure that partisan political views are not promoted in the teaching of any subject in the school and where political issues are brought to the attention of the pupils, reasonable, practical steps have been taken to offer a balanced presentation of opposing views.”
At Nine Mile Ride Primary School these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways.
Democracy
Democracy is embedded at the school. Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. Pupils also have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our Junior Leadership Team and regular questionnaires. The elections of the School Council, Green Team, Healthy Schools, Digital Leaders and Class Captains are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.
The Rule of Law
The importance of laws whether they are those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced. Our school has ‘Golden Rules’, which are deeply embedded in our work every day. Each class also discusses and sets its own rules that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment. Our pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
Individual Liberty
Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; examples of this can be clearly seen in our e-safety and P.S.H.E. lessons. Whether it is through choice of challenge; of how they record; of participation in our sporting activities and numerous extra- curricular activities; our pupils are given the freedom to make choices.
Mutual Respect
Respect is one of the core values of our school and it is deeply embedded in all that we do at the school. The pupils know and understand that it is expected and imperative that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have and to everything, however big or small. The core value of Respect at Nine Mile Ride Primary School underpins our work every day both in and out of the classroom.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
Our core value of Respect ensures tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs. Nine Mile Ride Primary School enhances pupils understanding of different faiths and beliefs through religious education studies; P.S.H.E. work; visits to places of worship; welcoming visitors from the community that are not predominately white British and enjoying a depth of study during themed weeks. During Diversity Week the whole school will focus on different countries from around the world. Beliefs, traditions and customs will be studied in depth, with visitors being invited in to our school to enrich and extend understanding. Through this our pupils gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
SMSC
Nine Mile Ride Primary aims to embed SMSC in all aspects of school life, from individual lessons to extra-curricular activities and assemblies. A progressive scheme of work is followed that is based upon an enquiry question and encompasses British values as part of the learning.
Spiritual Development
Children are given opportunity to be reflective about their own beliefs (religious or otherwise) and form their own perspective on different faiths, feelings and values. They are encouraged to show enjoyment and fascination towards themselves and the world around them and reflect on this with imagination and creativity.
Moral Development
Teachers plan opportunities for children to explore the difference between right and wrong and the consequences of their actions. They learn to respect civil and criminal law and are encouraged to understand and appreciate the moral and ethical viewpoints of others.
Social Development
Children are encouraged to work alongside people from other backgrounds. They participate in social setting and communities including volunteering, cooperating and resolving conflicts effectively.
British values, democracy, rule of law, mutual respect, liberty and tolerance are promoted, with children being encouraged to make a positive contribution to modern Britain.
Cultural Development
Children are encouraged to develop an interest in exploring different faiths and cultural diversity. We teach them to show understanding towards others in their local, global and national communities.
By the end of Year 6, children have a knowledge of the parliamentary system of core British values and history and are given opportunity to participate and respond to artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities.
